How To Spray BRUSHTOX™
Woody plants like mesquite, oak, locust, wild rose and sweetgum, don’t stand a chance against BRUSHTOX™. This systemic herbicide kills more than 60 woody plants and more than 30 broadleaf weeds, like Canada thistle, milkweed and dog fennel. Since BRUSHTOX™ targets broadleaf weeds, many natural grasses won’t be harmed and many even flourish without the added competition for nutrients.
BRUSHTOX™ can be applied three ways, directly to foliage, to a cut stump or as a basal bark treatment.
Apply directly to foliage.
Apply 1 to 8 quarts per acre of BRUSHTOX™ to control broadleaf weeds and woody plants. The label suggests amounts based on weeds and application areas. Always use with sufficient water to give thorough coverage of the plants you need controlled. If you’re using a thickening agent, surfactant or additional herbicide, add those to the water before adding BRUSHTOX™. Spray the mix on the plant, thoroughly wetting the leaves and roots, but not so much as to cause runoff. Use spray equipment that will assure uniform coverage and the USDA Planting Zones Guide for temperature and weather conditions for application timing to achieve optimum control of your woody plants or broadleaf weeds.
Apply to a cut stump.
To prevent resprouting of cut stumps of susceptible species, mix 20 to 30 gallons of BRUSHTOX™ in enough oil to make 100 gallons of spray mixture. Apply with a low-pressure backpack or knapsack sprayer using a solid cone or flat fan nozzle. Spray the root collar area, sides of the stump and the outer portion of the cut surface including the cambium until thoroughly wet, but not to the point of runoff. The mixture’s concentration should be modified to allow for differences in size and susceptibility of species treated. (Check the label.)
Apply as a basal bark treatment.
BRUSHTOX™ can be used in oil or oil-water mixtures to control woody plants in non-crop areas (follow the use directions on the oil’s label). To control woody plants with stems less than 6 inches in basal diameter, mix 1 to 5 gallons of BRUSHTOX™ in enough oil to make 100 gallons of spray mixture. Apply with a low pressure (20-40 psi) knapsack sprayer or power sprayer. Spray the basal parts of brush and tree trunks to a height of 12 to 15 inches from the ground; thoroughly wetting this zone for good control and spray to the point of runoff. Brush or trees with older or rough bark may require more spray than smooth young bark.
Applying BRUSHTOX™ to a cut stump or as a basal bark treatment can be done at any time of year, including the winter, unless snow or water prevent spraying to the ground line. We can’t stress this enough – always read and follow the BRUSHTOX label directions.
