Slam the Door on Uninvited Pests this Winter
Insects like flies, mosquitos, ticks and wasps are expected to be pests in the summer months. Once the temperature drops, the outdoors become habitable again, but it doesn’t mean you’re done dealing with pests.
Winter is a prime time for nefarious insects to burrow their way inside your home to wait out the cold months. Some of the biggest culprits are ants and cockroaches.
Seeing Ants Inside is Never a Good Sign
Crazy ants are common in southern states and infest in large numbers. These ants are known to sneak into homes, sometimes brought in from hay bales. Then there are winged carpenter ants, or flying ants. Seeing these inside your home in the winter is bad news because it usually means there’s a good possibility a carpenter ant nest is located somewhere within the structure of your home.
Cockroaches: the Kitchen Fiend
Cockroaches are found throughout the world, the most common species being the German cockroach. They love to live in small areas close to food and moisture, i.e., your kitchen. Cockroaches get inside your home through grocery bags, boxes and secondhand appliances. They contaminate food sources and spread bacteria. Even worse, their allergens can exacerbate asthma symptoms, especially in children.
